Meet Dr. William A. Byrd
Orthopaedic Surgeon
Born in Morgantown, West Virginia, Dr. Byrd grew up in Virginia Beach after moving here when he was 2 years old. The Norfolk Academy graduate returned to this area after earning his medical degree at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, his orthopaedic residency at Duke in Durham, NC and fellowship in adult reconstruction surgery at the Southern Joint Replacement Institute in Nashville, TN. He specializes in hip, knee, and revision surgeries. At Norfolk Academy, Dr. Byrd was a scholar and an All-American pole vaulter. He continued his athletic and academic pursuits at Princeton University where he majored in Biology and served as captain of the varsity track team. The team earned Ivy League championships and Dr. Byrd was repeatedly named to the All-Ivy League decathlon, heptathlon and pole vaulting teams. Dr. Byrd says that he always wanted to be an orthopaedic surgeon and while a resident at Duke, he developed a passion for the intricacies of adult reconstruction surgery. Dr. Byrd has extensive training in anterior approach total hip replacement (“jiffy hip”), computer-assisted surgery, GPS navigated surgery, and complex revision joint replacement.
In his free time, Dr. Byrd enjoys spending time with his wife Rachel, a dermatologist, their daughter Claire, and their Goldendoodle, Ellie. As well as boating, fishing, and hunting.

The Outpatient Advantage
The Anterior Approach Hip Replacement,
designed to achieve a more rapid recovery by not cutting the large muscles in your hip, is potentially a same day procedure. In conjunction with this, Dr. Byrd uses the newest computerized technology-JointPointTM, to ensure a precise, natural feel that gets you back in the game with long lasting results.
This potentially outpatient
procedure is enhanced by new technology similar to the GPS navigation technology offered on your smart phone!
Dr. Byrd uses a customized technique to replicate your natural knee motion, navigate precisely back to correct alignment for longevity, & minimize trauma to speed your recovery.
Total joint replacements are moving to the outpatient setting thanks to advances in technology and anesthesia. Outpatient total joint replacement procedures provide the following benefits:
-
The ability to leave the day of your procedure.
-
Quicker recovery time.
-
Reduced risk of infection.
-
Lower cost due to no overnight stay.
